Slow heating of cask wood at lower temperature and for longer than charring, without carbonising the surface, degrading hemicellulose and lignin into vanillin, furfural and spice aldehydes.

No whisky regulation in Scotland, Ireland, the United States, the EU or Japan defines this. It is a trade or marketing term, so it is only actionable if its use is actively misleading.
Often confused with char
Charring burns the surface to carbon in seconds and produces a filtering layer plus rapid colour. Toasting cooks the wood over minutes to hours and develops aroma deeper into the stave without carbon. Casks are often toasted and then lightly charred.
