Solera
No legal definition
A fractional-blending system borrowed from sherry, in which a vat is only ever partially emptied and is topped up with younger stock, so a small proportion of very old liquid persists indefinitely.
Not a legal term
No whisky regulation in Scotland, Ireland, the United States, the EU or Japan defines this. It is a trade or marketing term, so it is only actionable if its use is actively misleading.
Worth knowing
The commercial catch: since any age claim must refer to the youngest component, a solera vat can only carry an age statement equal to its youngest addition. Whisky 'soleras' are therefore usually a topping-up regime feeding a conventional bottling, not a true multi-criadera sherry solera.
