Regauge

No legal definition

The physical re-measurement of a cask in warehouse — weighing or dipping to establish bulk volume, and sampling to establish strength — to produce a current alcohol figure and revalue the contents.

Not a legal term

No whisky regulation in Scotland, Ireland, the United States, the EU or Japan defines this. It is a trade or marketing term, so it is only actionable if its use is actively misleading.

Worth knowing

For cask buyers it is the only reliable evidence of both quantity and, via the sample, quality. No UK operator we checked publishes a regauge fee.
