cask

Refill

No legal definition

A cask on its second or subsequent fill with whisky, whose extractable wood compounds have been substantially depleted by earlier fills.

Not a legal term

No whisky regulation in Scotland, Ireland, the United States, the EU or Japan defines this. It is a trade or marketing term, so it is only actionable if its use is actively misleading.

Worth knowing

There is no legal limit on the number of fills, which is why cask management rather than cask type determines much of the flavour outcome in mature Scotch inventories.
