The pipe carrying vapour from the still's neck to the condenser. Its angle, length and diameter govern reflux: an upward slope returns more heavy vapour and gives lighter spirit, a downward slope gives heavier, oilier spirit.
Not a legal term
No whisky regulation in Scotland, Ireland, the United States, the EU or Japan defines this. It is a trade or marketing term, so it is only actionable if its use is actively misleading.
Worth knowing
Because still geometry is treated as definitive of character, replacement stills at Scotch distilleries are usually copied dent-for-dent. The Irish technical file goes further and forbids alterations to still design that would move the flavour profile away from typical Irish new make.
